It has been a minute since I updated you with what I have been reading recently! I have three thriller book reviews to share with you today.
At some point, my blog became more about recommending new releases and seasonal book lists instead of book reviews. Most of my book reviews are now on Instagram or Goodreads because I honestly find it easier to share my thoughts on those platforms. However, I hope you still enjoy seeing my thoughts in a mini book review format here on blog! I know not everyone is on Instagram or Goodreads, so I am trying to make more of an effort to share my reviews on my blog again.
I have primarily been a mystery/thriller reader since I rediscovered my love of reading, but lately I have been having a tough time finding something that “wows” me! It feels like every thriller has the same tropes or ending I’ve already read. Please keep in mind that I read a lot of thrillers and I’m hard to please these days. I still recommend the books on this list even if I was disappointed in their endings!
Possession by Katie Lowe
Hannah’s husband was murdered in their home ten years ago. The police called it a burglary gone wrong, and Hannah has tried to move on with her life since then. But now a true crime podcast, Conviction, is digging into the past, brining unwanted attention to Hannah. Conviction thinks Hannah has something hide and in a way, they are right.
Wow. So this book was a lot, but it kept me guessing and there were several plot twists I did not figure out at all. I’ll admit there was almost too much going on with the plot at times. After a couple of days away from the books, I was getting characters mixed up, but I really liked the conclusion to this story. I definitely recommend checking out Possession if you like a good psychological thriller.
Many thanks to St. Martin’s Press for providing me with an advance copy of this title in exchange for my honest review.
Every Last Fear by Alex Finlay
A family made famous by a true crime documentary is found dead while on vacation in Mexico. Now the surviving son must solve the mystery of his family’s murder and how it relates to the murder his brother is accused of committing.
Every Last Fear started out so strong and I was so interested in the mystery, but I found the ending to be a bit of a letdown. I thought the storytelling was really unique. There were multiple POVs, which could get confusing at times, but reading what happened to the Pine family in the days leading up to their murder kept me guessing. Who was truly to blame? What was the motive?
There were also POVs from the surviving son and the FBI detective assigned to the case as they both worked to piece together what had happened and how it connected to the murder the oldest Pine son had been accused of years ago. I recommend checking out Every Last Fear if you enjoy true crime documentaries or podcasts.
Many thanks to Minotaur Books for providing me with an advance copy of this title in exchange for my honest review.
Goodnight Beautiful by Aimee Molloy
I am going to try to briefly give a synopsis of Goodnight Beautiful, but honestly the blurb on the book gives way too much away.
This is a domestic thriller about a newly married couple. Sam is a therapist and Annie spends most of her time alone while Sam works with clients. Sam has a troubling past and often doubts he can be a good husband to Annie. One day he receives a text from a client asking him to meet after work. He makes a last minute decision to meet the client instead of going home after work, disrupting his happily ever after with Annie.
So there are two absolutely incredible twists in this book that blew my mind. I was so hyped for what was coming next because I just knew I was in for a wild ride. Unfortunately the second half of this book missed the mark for me. This is definitely a book you will either love or hate. It totally depends on your taste in thrillers!
