Hello, fellow readers! I decided to pick my next book from my backlist TBR shelf upstairs. I am trying to make my way through all of the books on that shelf before the end of the year so I can swap or donate those books.
I decided on The Last Mrs. Parrish by Liv Constantine. This book was a Reese’s Book Club pick in 2017. I ended up downloading the audiobook from my library as well.
Amber is tired of being a nobody in the background. Daphne has the picture-perfect life. The two women become friends, and Amber is envious of Daphne’s perfect husband and vast wealth. Amber sets plan in motion, a plan that will only work if she plays her cards right and her past isn’t discovered.
I’ve heard good reviews here and there for The Last Mrs. Parrish over the past couple of years, but I honestly didn’t know what this book was about. Turns out, it is best to go in to this one not knowing much about it, so I don’t recommend reading the full plot synopsis.
Unfortunately, I did not love this one as much as everyone else. It was about 100 pages too long and not much of a thriller. It is a psychological women’s fiction, reminiscent of The Woman on the Train, Gone Girl, or The Woman in the Window.
There is a twist about half way through the book that made things slightly more interesting, but once you get to that point, you can see how everything will eventually play out.
I listened to about half of this on audiobook while playing Animal Crossing, so it was an easy listen while doing other things. I think it would have taken me much longer than a week to get through this one if I had been trying to physically read it the entire time.
If you read a lot of psychological mysteries or thrillers, you won’t find anything new or original from this title. If you are dipping your toe into the genre, The Last Mrs. Parrish is absolutely a great place to start!
