Plot

For estranged friends Ashley, Natalie, and Lauren, it’s time to heal the old wounds between them. Where better to repair those severed ties than on a girls’ getaway to the beautiful paradise of Tulum, Mexico? But even after they’re reunited, no one is being completely honest about the past or the secrets they’re hiding. When Ashley disappears on their girls’ night out, Natalie and Lauren have to try to piece together their hazy memories to figure out what could have happened to her, while also reconciling their feelings of guilt over their last moments together.

Was Ashley with the man she’d met only days before? Did she pack up and leave? Was she kidnapped? Or worse—could Natalie or Lauren have snapped under the weight of her own lies?

As the clock ticks, hour by hour, Natalie and Lauren’s search rushes headlong into growing suspicion and dread. Maybe their secrets run deeper and more dangerous than one of them is willing—or too afraid—to admit.

Review

Many thanks to Lake Union Publishing and Netgalley for an ARC of this title in exchange for my honest review.

Three friends, Ashley, Natalie, and Lauren travel to Mexico in an attempt to repair their friendship. Natalie and Ashley work together and Lauren is the odd woman out. The book opens with Natalie waking up on the beach in a wet dress and no memory of the night before. Lauren is in her room, but Ashley is gone.

Girls’ Night Out is chick-lit with a mystery and a lot of suspense. The three friends are terrible to each other, and it was hard for me to like any of them. I will admit that eventually their petty drama got a little boring. You don’t truly know why Lauren is mad at Ashley until about halfway through the book, and I wanted to slap Lauren. Natalie has her own set of issues with Ashley, and let’s just say, this trip sounds about as much fun as a root canal by day two.

The story is told from all three characters’ perspectives, although we get more of Natalie and Ashley than Lauren. The timeline also jumps around-sometimes you are reading what happened days before Ashley went missing and sometimes it is what is happening in the present. This took a little getting used to, but it really adds to the mystery and suspense of the plot.

Final Thoughts

I was at the 30% mark when I was hooked on Girls’ Night Out. It is a very quick read of drama, mystery, and suspense-the perfect summer beach read! There were several times when I thought I had the mystery solved, and then the next chapter would prove me wrong. I love when I can’t totally guess the ending! The last page gave me chills and left me feeling very unsettled.
