After a pretty exciting July selection, I am already looking forward to August’s selections.
I don’t know how Book of the Month will choose between all the amazing thrillers coming out in August! Don’t be surprised if we have another thriller heavy month with some repeat authors to choose from.
If you’ve been around for a while, you know Book of the Month (BOTM) is my favorite book subscription service. I love the anticipation of finally seeing the seven monthly picks and always have fun trying to guess what may show up on the app on the first of every month.
If you aren’t familiar with BOTM, you can check out my full review of this subscription service. The basic idea is BOTM chooses 5-7 books from different genres every month and members can choose their pick when the books go live. You can also add on up to two more books for only $10.99 each.
If you don’t like any of the picks, you can choose to skip and save your credit for the next month, which is honestly the best part of this service to me. I don’t like subscription boxes that only offer one book selection that you don’t know ahead of time. If you are interested in trying BOTM, you can use my link to get your first book for only $5!
As usual, these are just my opinions and my predictions. It is fine if you disagree or think the predictions are terrible-we all have different reading tastes. Please remember to be kind in comments or messages because we are all readers with different tastes!
Thriller/Mystery Predictions
Stay Awake by Megan Goldin
Release Date: August 9, 2022
Repeat Author
I read an ARC of Stay Awake and really enjoyed it! I appreciate a thriller with a different take on things, so I thought it was unique this story relies on a character who loses her memory when she falls asleep. I think a lot of people would find this to be a breath of fresh air for BOTM thriller picks.
The Family Remains by Lisa Jewell
release date: August 9, 2022
Repeat Author
The Family Remains is a chilling standalone sequel to The Family Upstairs. I’m assuming you could read this without reading The Family Upstairs since it is blurbed as a standalone, but I still think you check it out anyway. I will need to read a summary before reading this one!
The Last Housewife by Ashley Winstead
Release Date: August 16, 2022
From the author of the acclaimed In My Dreams I Hold a Knife (one of my favorite books from 2021) comes a pitch-black thriller about a woman determined to destroy a powerful cult and avenge the deaths of the women taken in by it, no matter the cost.
Daisy Darker by Alice Feeney
Release Date: August 30, 2022
Repeat Author
A family reunion leads to murder when the Darkers frind themselves trapped on an island where someone is killing them one by one. Because of the late August pub date, I could also see this as a September possibility.
Girl, Forgotten by Karin Slaughter

Repeat Author
An electrifying thriller from the author of Pieces of Her featuring newly minted US Marshal Andrea Oliver as she investigates a cold case with links to her father’s past.

The Hookup Plan by Farrah Rochon
Release date: August 2, 2022
Repeat Author
Strong female friendships and a snappy enemies-to-lovers theme take center stage in this highly anticipated romantic comedy from the USA Today bestselling author of The Dating Playbook.
Mad About You by Mhairi McFarlane
Release date: August 9, 2022
*This release is a bit confusing because there is a paperback with a different cover available on Amazon and the ebook and audiobook are listed as releasing in August. So I’m assuming this was already released maybe in the UK and will be releases in the US in August.
International bestseller Mhairi McFarlane delivers a sharp, emotional new novel about a woman who calls off her engagement to “the perfect man” and moves in with a charming stranger who makes her question everything about her life, her past, and the secrets she’s kept for far too long.
One Night with the Duke by Jodie Ellen Malpas
Release date: August 16, 2022
*Another slightly confusing release. Amazon only lists ebook and audiobook options for preorder. So this one is probably unlikely to be a pick, but you never know!
Million‑copy bestselling author Jodi Ellen Malpas is back with a scorching Regency series, perfect for fans of Bridgerton.
Contemporary Fiction Predictions
Mike in Real Life by Emiko Jean
Release date: August 2, 2022
In this brilliant new novel by from Emiko Jean, the author of the New York Times bestselling young adult novel Tokyo Ever After, comes a whip-smart, laugh-out-loud funny, and utterly heartwarming novel about motherhood, daughterhood, and love—how we find it, keep it, and how it always returns.
Carrie Soto is Back by Taylor Jenkins Reid
Release date: August 30, 2022
repeat author, possible member riots if not a pick/add-on in August or September
In this powerful novel about the cost of greatness, a legendary athlete attempts a comeback when the world considers her past her prime—from the New York Times bestselling author of Malibu Rising. This book feels more likely to be in the September picks/add-ons because of the late August pub date. Also, I struggle to accept that a book set in 1994 should be categorized as historical fiction so I left it under contemporary fiction.
Historical Fiction Predictions
Haven by Emma Donoghue
Release date: August 23, 2022
In this beautiful story of adventure and survival from the New York Times bestselling author of Room, three men vow to leave the world behind them as they set out in a small boat for an island their leader has seen in a dream, with only faith to guide them.

Sci-Fi/Horror Predictions

Reminiscent of the works of Margaret Atwood, Shirley Jackson, and Octavia Butler, a biting social commentary from the acclaimed author of Lakewood that speaks to our times—a piercing dystopian novel about the unbreakable bond between a young woman and her mysterious mother, set in a world in which witches are real and single women are closely monitored.
